WASHINGTON, D.C.—June 17, 2016 – The Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Council wins the fifth annual Great American Can Roundup (GACR) Scout Council Challenge by recycling 1,772 pounds of aluminum beverage cans. These outstanding recycling efforts result in the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland receiving $500 prize money plus the value of the recycled aluminum cans.

Girl Scouts of Central Maryland Chief Executive Officer Violet Apple said, “This girl scouts have proven that together they set their minds towards succeeding in this important recycling challenge.”

The GACR Scout Council Challenge, sponsored by the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), is designed to create awareness of the environmental benefits of recycling cans. The challenge ran from Jan. 15 through April 30, 2016.

Along with the scout council winner, which is determined by pounds of aluminum recycled per council members, additional prizes are awarded to the individual troops that recycle the most per capita amongst all participating councils. Brownie Troop 10102 takes first place amongst the troops by recycling 1,643 pounds of aluminum beverage cans.

“The brownies of troop 10102 are proud of the work they do in their community, but recognize that this is an award to share with their community and school, Folger McKinsey Elementary School,” said Troop Leader Valerie Shinnamon.

The second place council winner, the Girl Scouts of Louisiana Pines to the Gulf Council, receives $300 in prize money plus the value of the aluminum beverage cans recycled.

“Congratulations to all of the dedicated scouts in their recycling efforts for this GACR Scout Council Challenge,” said CMI President Robert Budway. “The GACR is an important vehicle for educating people in their formative years about the impressive benefits of recycling aluminum beverage cans. With a 64.3 percent recycling rate, aluminum cans are the most sustainable beverage package by nearly every metric. And, because the beverage can is infinitely recyclable, it can be recycled and back on a store shelf in as little as 60 days.”
