Earth Day Recycling Facts

America Recycles Day Promotion

America Recycles Day — a day dedicated nationally to raise awareness of and involvement in recycling — is November 15, 2007. To mark the day, the aluminum can industry is challenging all aluminum sheet and can facilities to save and recycle aluminum cans, and to challenge family, friends, and members of the community to do so as well. By collecting the cans at our corporate offices, plants or other community venues from September 1 to the final tally on America Recycles Day, we can demonstrate the value and importance of recycling aluminum beverage cans to our customers, our communities and ourselves.

The Aluminum Can Council (ACC), a partnership between the Can Manufacturers Institute and the Aluminum Association, is sponsoring the Aluminum Can Challenge. The Challenge is one way to demonstrate the can industry's commitment to the environment, by demonstrating that the industry itself is active and involved in collecting and recycling used aluminum beverage cans. The ACC is asking that all aluminum corporate offices, sheet, can and end facilities participate in collecting their aluminum cans and competing for prizes in celebration of America Recycles Day. The Challenge is easy to join, fun to conduct, and offers prizes for employees at each participating facility.

Registration will begin in July 2007. All participating plants must be registered by November 1, 2007. Employees can begin collecting and asking friends, community groups, schools, businesses to recycle cans at designated locations for the plant, as soon as the facility registers. The top three facilities recycling the most aluminum cans per capita will receive a $500 check for their selected local charity. The aluminum recycling operation facility recycling the most per capita wins a $500 check for their selected local charity.

Objectives

  1. Promote America Recycles Day at aluminum sheet, can, end, and other plant facilities
  2. Generate recycling awareness among employees and local communities
  3. Provide opportunities to raise funds for local charitable organizations

Ideally, the aluminum can industry will collect significant pounds of aluminum cans that on America Recycles Day will convincingly demonstrate the impact of recycling when enough people participate. The America Recycles Day Challenge will allow us to show in just one day the value and importance of aluminum can recycling every day of the year.
