Aluminum Can Industry Challenge Raises $80,000 for Charities by Recycling More Than 167,000 Pounds of Beverage Cans
Ardagh Group's Elk Grove Village Facility Receives Top Honors; Ball Corporation Recycles Most Overall
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Dec 5, 2016 —The Ardagh plant in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, recycled 8,732 pounds of aluminum beverage cans this year, earning them top honors in the 2016 Great American Can Roundup (GACR) Industry Challenge. The efforts of the facility’s 67 employees raised more than $3,600 for Ronald McDonald House. As the winner of the challenge, Ardagh receives an additional $2,000 to donate to a charity of their choice.
The GACR Industry Challenge, sponsored by the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), promotes awareness around the environmental benefits of recycling aluminum cans by encouraging its members to compete in the challenge. The winner is based on cans collected per employee at participating facilities. In 2016, more than 5,000 employees from CMI member company facilities across the country collected more than 167,000 pounds of beverage cans, raising more than $80,000 for charity. The facilities partner with their local schools, charities and other organizations to spread the recycling message and give back to their community. Since its inception, the GACR Industry Challenge has recycled more than 7 million pounds of aluminum cans.

Ardagh’s various plants recycled more than 12,000 pounds of cans and earned more than $5,000 for charity.
The 565 employees at Ball Corporation’s Headquarters in Broomfield, Colorado, recycled 64,140 pounds of cans, raising more than $14,000 to earn second place and an additional $1,000 for charity. The money they earned from recycling went to the Ball Foundation, which is the philanthropic arm of the company. Fifteen Ball Corporation facilities recycled the most cans for a single company, totaling more than 120,000 pounds and raising almost $40,000 for a variety of charities.
Novelis’ Greensboro plant in Georgia took third place by recycling 12,000 pounds of aluminum beverage cans and raising more than $10,200 for local schools. Five Novelis facilities with 1,795 employees recycled 32,475 pounds and raised more than $32,000 for charity.
