Representing a large segment of the beverage, food and general line packaging industry, CMI closely monitors developments affecting labeling requirements for products packaged in cans. Regulations are promulgated both on the federal and state levels and can affect labeling with respect to both the package itself and its contents. Labeling regulations can be established in connection with product health concerns, deposit systems, excise tax levies, alcohol beverage controls, environmental marketing claims and other various issues.
CMI is presently involved in a coalition group whose goal is to establish national labeling requirements in order to avoid the complicated and extremely expensive task of meeting regulatory labeling requirements in 50 different states.
Environmental marketing claims made by packaging manufacturers on their labels also concern the can manufacturing industry given the industry's exemplary recycling rates over the past 20 years and the advancements made in "light weighting" and "closed-loop recycling." CMI has officially endorsed the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims and supports the adoption of the FTC Guidelines by states seeking to clarify regulations addressing environmental marketing claims. Likewise, CMI opposes the creation of programs whose purpose is to award one packaging type a "seal of approval" based upon a contrived list of environmental criteria.
Generally speaking, labeling issues have historically been directed at the can's contents more than the can itself. However, CMI has closely monitored changes to labeling requirements affecting the can industry as they have occurred in the U.S. CMI has published its Guide to Beverage Can Labeling and makes updates as necessary.
