Not only did Wahpeton, North Dakota students discover that they could raise enough money through aluminum can recycling to buy a camel, but how about two camels! Shortly after Sir Humphrey, a young male camel, arrived at the Wahpeton Zoo, the students on a visit reflected that he looked lonely. Solution – turn up the recycling volume to purchase a female camel. Female camels are more expensive and it took a little longer, but with community support a female camel named Lady Sara soon joined Sir Humphrey. The students’ Cans for Camels recycling drive has now turned into Cans to Feed the Camels, especially since they had a baby.
