Overview

We invite you to participate in the Aluminum Cans for Burned Children Recycling Program coordinated by the North Carolina State Fireman's Association (NCSFA), Aluminum Can Council (ACC), and the North Carolina Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance. We are creating a fundraiser in response to a new law (North Carolina Session Law 2005-348) requiring holders of on-premise Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) permits to separate, store and provide for the collection and recycling of recyclable containers sold at retail for on-premise consumption. ABC on-premise permit holders would donate their aluminum cans to local firefighters who would in turn, recycle the cans. The aluminum can recycling proceeds would stay in the state and be donated to the University of North Carolina Jaycee's Burn Center (25 percent of their patients are children), Shriners Hospital Burn Centers for Children, and to fund fire prevention education.

The law will affect some 8,000 on-premise ABC permit holders and an estimated 10 million malt beverage aluminum cans consumed at restaurants, bars, hotels, golf courses, sports complexes, race tracks, bowling alleys, marinas, etc. per year. NCSFA has a strong membership, open to NC's 43,000 career and volunteer firefighters, representing 1,300 fire departments. Couple this with the ACC, a joint effort of the Can Manufacturers Institute and the Aluminum Association, recognized for its ability to promote and foster aluminum can recycling solutions and North Carolinians win.

Implementation is set for January 1, 2008. To help ABC permit holders prepare for the new law, suggest starting by recycling their aluminum cans with NCSFA members. It should make the transition to recycling the other containers much easier. The sooner you register and start asking the ABC on-premise permit holders for their cans, the greater the benefit to those you serve and the environment. A friendly Tool Kit follows to help guide you. Also, Jenny Day will be delighted to answer any questions at 202/232-4677 or jday@cancentral.com.

Registration will begin September 2007. All participating firehouses or units must register at www.ncsfa.com under "Aluminum Cans for Burned Children" no later than December 1, 2007. Fire stations that decline will have their area reassigned if a neighboring firehouse is interested in expanding its territory. A map of participating firehouses will be posted at NCSFA/ACC/CMI ACBC website.

Objectives

  1. Demonstrate a commitment to the betterment of North Carolina.
  2. Call on ABC on-premise permit holders to donate aluminum cans to local firefighters who in turn will recycle the cans for ACBC.
  3. Donate recycling proceeds to the University of North Carolina Jaycee's Burn Center, Shriners Hospital Burn Centers for Children or to fund fire prevention education.
  4. Develop a pro-active, sustainable community recycling program NC Session Law 2005-348 that helps the environment, benefits North Carolinians, and recognizes permit holder's community service.
  5. Work within each jurisdiction's unique recycling situation, local rules and regulations so ABC permit holders can comply with the recycling law and collect all their aluminum cans for ACBC recycling.
  6. Proactively stimulate recycling among firefighters, ABC on-premise permit holders, their employees, patrons, and local communities making a positive contribution to our environment.
  7. Build on firefighter and industry sustainability philosophies with the promotion of ecological and social goals for a better community.
  8. Leverage and promote the unique North Carolina firehouse fundraiser opportunity via NCSFA and ACC collaboration.
